Occasionally, we have a chapel that is unique for some reason and I like to share. Friday we had one of those chapels. At Heritage, all of our teachers take turns arranging the chapel and leading chapel. This particular one was arranged by our other kindergarten teacher Mrs. Pastoor. The kindergartners were so excited to be able to do a special number. We sang two Christmas songs and then played "Carol of the Bells" with rhythm instruments. All was going well until after our special number. That was when Mrs. Pastoor noticed that although there were quite a few extra people there that morning, the speaker didn't seem to be one of them. Cautiously, she asked, "Has anyone seen....?" Everyone looked from one to another...but the speaker didn't seem to be anywhere in sight. I personnally thought that this was part of the speech and that the "missing speaker" part was rigged...but no! Well, Mrs. Pastoor announced that we would sing a few extra psalter numbers. While we sang, there were a few frantic calls made and we found out that the speaker wasn't going to be able to make it after all. Several teachers were starting to squirm and were feeling a little bit worried for Mrs. Pastoor. Note, none of us quickly jumped up to say we would speak. So, Mrs. Pastoor was quick on her feet and decided to read a book about being kind to one another. We sang another song while Mr. Kuiper went to get the book. When we saw him come to the front without the book, we knew we were glad to be sitting in the seats and not behind the microphone. Mrs. Pastoor soon informed us that the book was unavailable. By that time, there were not a whole lot of options left. We sang a few more songs and Mr. Kuiper closed with prayer. When he was finished, one of the kindergartners looked at me and said, "Wow, that was a short one." Well maybe not all of the students appreciated or understood the stress and worry that goes into planning chapel, but the teachers do. To that we say "Way to go, Mrs. Pastoor! Great job staying cool, calm and collected in a somewhat tense situation!" |
